Presentation Title:

After the Flight: Leveraging Machine Learning for Drone Data Analysis in Environmental Impact Prediction

Brendan Brown, Environmental Scientist, CDM Smith

Abstract:

Drone technology applications have revolutionized the way environmental and infrastructure data is collected, but for many practitioners, the true challenge arises after the flight. With gigabytes of data from high-resolution cameras, LiDAR, and multispectral sensors, turning this data into actionable decisions becomes a significant hurdle. By integrating machine learning into drone data analysis, along with deep learning techniques, we can extract actionable intelligence that human subject matter experts can use to base their decisions. This presentation will highlight how these machine learning and deep learning models are utilized for tasks such as classifying land cover, mapping invasive species, detecting changes, and predicting ecological impacts with unprecedented accuracy. These advanced tools not only enhance decision-making but also streamline regulatory compliance and permitting workflows. Attendees will gain valuable insights into practical applications, implementation strategies, and future directions for AI and geospatial technologies, including their role in environmental impact prediction within Florida's environmental sector.
