Training and Operations: Lessons Learned by Airlines and Their Application to Part 108 for Drone Training and UAS Operations

We will briefly discuss the imminent changes to the FAA Part 107 exam, how Part 108 operations will look very different than today’s Part 107 operations and, lessons and practices learned by the airlines that can be incorporated into Part 108 operations.

For the last portion of the presentation I will be acting in my capacity as an Orlando FSDO FAAST member.  We will discuss a critical lesson learned from the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster and how that lesson is applicable to every and all aviation operations.

Justin Hensley is an aviation and flight instruction subject matter expert with more than 25 years of experience. He is an Airbus A220 pilot, instructor, and check airman and a former EMS helicopter pilot, instructor, and check airman. He has also founded three successful sUAS businesses, including UAS Success.

A leader in UAS operations and safety, Justin authored the first Part 107 waiver authorizing flight over moving vehicles for a heavy-lift drone without a parachute, as well as the first FAA-accepted Part 107 Operations and Training Manuals and Safety Management System (SMS).

Justin holds FAA ATP Airplane and Helicopter certificates, a helicopter CFI-I, and a Remote Pilot Certificate. A FAAST member and former paramedic, he has helped countless students pass FAA written exams, achieving an average student score of 91%, while mentoring aviators throughout his career.
